What Does a General Surgeon Do?

General surgeons are trained to provide comprehensive surgical services to address many medical conditions, illnesses, diseases and injuries. This includes both emergency and scheduled procedures to treat the whole body.

Additionally, Bayfront surgeons in our St. Petersburg facility are trained in minimally invasive laparoscopic and robot-assisted procedures. These surgical options may mean less bleeding, fewer complications, and faster recovery periods for patients. (Talk to your surgeon to learn if a minimally invasive or robotic procedure could be beneficial for you.)

Surgeons at Bayfront Health Medical Group work with patients, their families and the diagnosing physicians to treat the whole person. Maintaining open communication is essential for a successful post-operative recovery.

What Procedures Would I See a General Surgeon For?

General surgeons provide treatment for conditions such as:

  • Hernia Removal: A hernia is tissue protruding through weak spots in surrounding tissue. These can occur in the stomach, groin, belly button or at the incision site of a prior surgery.
  • Appendectomy: the emergency removal of an inflamed appendix. If appendicitis is left untreated, the appendix can rupture and be potentially fatal.
  • Breast Disorders: Lumpectomy, biopsy, and mastectomy
  • Melanoma Treatment: Skin cancer, or melanoma, tumors must be surgically removed. In the case of melanoma, lymph node removal may also be a component.
